Mountrihas Vineyards are located in the Valley of Mytikas on the Isle of Evia, known as Avantis in ancient times, and in Beotia, Central Greece. As a winemaking region, Beotia is known for the indigenous varietals such as Roditis and Malagouzia, and for the Rhone varieties, such as Syrah, Petite Syrah, and Grenache. The Mountrihas Family has owned the vineyards since 1830, but it was
not until 1990 that Apostolos Mountrihas and his father decided to venture
into the winemaking business and built a small winery on their estate.
The vineyards are 106 feet above sea level. Its proximity to the sea eases
the effects of the high temperatures prevalent in this region. Mountrihas
states that the viticulture with its minimal rainfalls, and its abundant
sunshine, combined with the clay soil of the region gives the wine vigor
and richness. Pneumatic pressing fermentation under controlled temperature
and the use of new French barriques produce high quality wines of limited
production. Avantis has earned numerous awards, certificates, and medals. |
